DISCOVER YOUR GREATNESS

Tips to Keep You Motivated

We get it, working out is not something everyone loves, and learning to love it take patience, determination, and motivation. Working out and getting in shape are great, when you reach a point that it becomes routine. But how do you get there?

You have tried everything, all the different types of fitness programs and styles. You have tried yoga, cardio-heavy workouts, weight lifting, and you have even tried karate, but nothing seems to keep you interested or motivated.

One thing to remember is that gym junkies were once in your place. They weren’t born with a need to workout and a love for fitness. They learned to love it, they were determined to make it part of their routine, and they got to where they are now with a lot of dedication and motivation.

Make Goals

There are different types of goal you can make. Goals based on your progress keep you moving.

Goals that are based on your progress are goals such as losing a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of time. Or being able to improve your cardio endurance to be able to run a faster mile. Anything that you can measure with the progress you have made. These goals are hard at first, because progress, when it comes to fitness, comes slowly. But once you start seeing progress, these goals can help you stay motivated to keep working toward your goals, and allow you to continue to improve your goals. Goals that keep you moving are not based on the results, rather, they are based on staying active. These goals are things like working out five times a week. Or running every other day. These goals are better at keeping you in the game initially, as long as you stay with your goals. If you force yourself to keep these goals, and you stay active the amount of days you said you would, you will be more motivated to keep going and make bigger goals. And pretty soon, you workouts will get easier, allowing you to make progress.

Make it Routine

Making something routine is an easy way to continue to do it. If your routine is to come home from work and sit on the couch for an hour, you will continue to do that. If you change your routine to being active rather than being a couch potato, it will start getting easier for you to keep up on your fitness goals and stay active more often than not.

Grab a Friend/ Tell a Friend

Finding a workout buddy is a great way to stay motivated. It gives you a chance to keep each other motivated, hold each other accountable, and force each other to hit the gym on a regular basis. But if you do this motivate each other, don’t talk each other out of working out for the day, this will end in both of you failing at your fitness goals.

If you are the type of person who doesn’t like working out with someone else, then just tell someone. When we tell people about our goals we are more likely to keep to them. It is easy to let ourselves down, but letting our friends and family down is a lot harder. So telling someone about you new fitness goal will help them keep you on top of your game.

Reward or Punish Yourself

Now this may sound wierd, but we all need our rewards every once in awhile. But if our reward comes before our workout, then we must punish ourselves with a harder workout. Let’s say you eat a donut, go ahead and enjoy it but just know you will have to burn those extra calories to get yourself back on pace to reach your goal—a punishment.

Rewards, unfortunately, should not be donuts. If you work hard in a workout, you should not ruin it all at once with a sweet treat. Instead treat yourself to a new pair of shoes, or the new watch you have been wanting. Obviously you can buy it whenever, but rewarding yourself for working out five days a week for the entire month feels a lot better and will keep you motivated.
